Day 28 & 29

A RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING amount of money has been raised over the past 2 days, I am SO happy!!

Firstly, THANK YOU to everyone that has donated and supported me.

Natalia has continued her barefoot wanders across Bristol and will ask her to blog about her whole ordeal, which I'll share with you guys :) She has been a great friend and her joining the last 5 days of No Shoes November means a lot to me. Asante Sana.

Rhian finished her 3 days barefoot and managed to raise a staggering £137 from her fellow RHUL students and friends. SO PROUD of my chwaer ifanca! Cariad bob amser <3

Sarah is not only amazing because she's done a day of solidarity for KOP because it means SO much to her too, she has also recruited incredible new KOPpers that also want to join No Shoes November!!

Charlotte Curtis, a new Cardiff KOPpers, has joined the last 2 days of No Shoes November, Already raised a nice chunk of her target towards her target and already saying "I'm addicted to KOP, can't wait for the trip in the Summer!"

KOP is infectious. KOP is incredible. KOP is a huge part of me.

Please help me raise as much awareness as possible on day 30 tomorrow!

If you haven't donated yet then anything small would be AWESOME!!

SO EXCITED for Day 30!!!

Lots of KOP love.

No Shoes Solidarity

Day 27 ..

Rhian has completed 3 days of barefoot solidarity for No Shoes November!! So proud of you :D
She studies Maths and Music at RHUL (Royal Holloway University of London) and is involved in all the music, drama and maths scenes so plenty of people saw her barefoot! Which is AMAZING!!
She is still collecting so haven't had the final total of the cash donations from her but it's over £100 which is awesome!! :D

Natalia is on her second day barefoot and wishes she started from Day 1!! She believes, possibly more passionately than myself, the fact that 1.4 billion people are living in extreme poverty is completely wrong and she has taken her shoes off to make people more aware of this!

Along the way, she has taken some great barefoot photos! One which I LOVE from today is of Steve, a fundraiser from the Red Cross. After she signed up to the Red Cross, he too took his shoes of in solidarity! It's now spreading further across Bristol! :D Today she discovered how AMAZING painted lines on the road and leaves are to walk on, us barefooters know exactly what she's talking about!!

She has been crucial, among others, in aiding my understanding of the charity sector, international development and the importance of helping the developing countries suffering from poverty, through the Kenyan Orphan Project. Without the experiences I've had volunteering with KOP I wouldn't be the person I am today.

I've never really thought we had a path chosen for us in life, but only because I never knew what it was. I now feel that my destiny is to work in international development, help others in the fight against poverty and really do something positive every day of my life. I can't wait to begin on this adventure. BUT until then I am learning lots and fundraising (hopefully lots!) for KOP.

Please help me get one step closer to fulfilling my dream of ending poverty by donating anything small. If you already have or really can't (which I understand) then why don't you go barefoot for a day or half a day to feel what it's like!? IF that doesn't appeal to you then I just ask you to share No Shoes November with your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours and even people you don't like, great conversation starter ;)

I was on 96.4 fm the wave radio station early this morning and I will be on Swansea Sound tomorrow morning, for all you early South West Wales radio listeners, tune in!

Remember .. www.justgiving.com/LucyNoShoesNovember

Thank YOU! It's YOU that can make a difference, I'm already doing what I can do. NOW it's YOUR turn!

Day 26 is barefoot crazy!!

No Shoes Tuesday at KOP HQ!!

Today has been incredible for millions of reasons ..

It started off with lots of donations reaching past the £900 mark early this morning.

While in the office, talking about No Shoes November, both the Student Programme Coordinator Natalia Fricker and Volunteer Ben Eder took off their shoes too! :D We had lots of fun outside taking photos and made them realise how cold it really is! Ben then had to cycle to Uni barefoot and Natalia had to walk 40 mins uphill barefoot! So happy and proud of you both for joining me today.

I also read a lovely message from Elizabeth at Kochogo Feeding Centre, a project that is 100% funded by KOP students. She thanks everyone for the donations and says lives were changed! This is why I'm doing No Shoes November, to change lives! They are living in poverty but because of KOP they have 3 nutritional meals a day and have access to healthcare and a good education. It isn't much to ask. £25 a month does this. Think you can spare that much?

I reached my target of £1,000 today :D wahooo!!!

A few photos from Natalia's long walk home from the KOP office ...

I'll leave you with my favourite of the day .. Some beautiful children that KOP support showing their appreciation for No Shoes November! These smiling faces are some of the incredible children KOP support. They smile every day yet they have very little but food in their bellies because of KOP.

Remember to make a difference, go to www.justgiving.com/LucyNoShoesNovember.

Thank you all so, so much!!

Day 25, out comes the foot spa ..

Today, I was tired and my feet were tired, recovering from the excitement of the weekend!

I had lots of publicity today at the Swansea Community Orchestra Christmas Concert, lots of people praising me for baring my feet in the freezing cold church and some donations too .. :)

The lovely Rhian Griffiths did her 2nd day of No Shoes November day, SO PROUD!! I hear she has already raised £60 for KOP, that I am SUPER excited about. Love you so much for taking your shoes off for sharing with the world that you too think poverty is wrong, and YOU have done something about it!!

Feet are in a bit of a mess and mam decided to get out the foot spa for me, for this I love you even more <3

I am around the £900 mark, I would love to reach and smash the £1,000 target I have set by the end of November!! Please share, tweet, post, pray and donate!! http://www.justgiving.com/LucyNoShoesNovember

Remember, there are 1.4 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD LIVING IN EXTREME POVERTY. They are the reason we are barefoot for 30 DAYS!! We want to put an end to poverty, TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!!

Only 5 days left!! :D

Thank you all SO SO MUCH for all the donations and encouraging support.

Lots of KOP love.

Weekend no. 4 - No Shoes Crew and KOP Santa Dash

This weekend has been incredible!!! :D

Saturday

I had a lovely time catching up with friends in Cardiff and making new ones with the No Shoes November crew at Woody Baptist Film night. Featured here other than myself is; Alex White and Andy Davies raising for Edith's Home Uganda and Lucy Avery and Matthew Boswell raising awareness for all the charities.

Sunday

I joined up with the KOP Cardiff 2014 team and did the 5k Santa Dash .. BAREFOOT!! It was hard running as I haven't been running since before my trip to Kenya in August! But after 1k I started to get new cuts and was lucky enough to pick out the glass from my feet before it caused too much damage ..

We ran around Cathays, Cardiff in our Christmas
fancy dress. We received lots of attention and took lots of photos on the way ...
A BIG shout out to the new KOPpers, Caitlin Armstrong, Lucy Gibb and Charlotte Curtis who joined myself and Sarah Roberts (KOP Cardiff President) in running and starting their fundraising.
So a HUGE well done to them. They looked incredible in their Santa Outfits too and already they have donations on their Justgiving page! Anyone reading this at Cardiff University thinking I missed out! Then look us up on https://www.facebook.com/CardiffKOP or send an email to kopafrica.cardiff@gmail.com. If you would like more information on the KOP Student Programme or whether there is a society at your uni or a uni near you then go to http://www.kopafrica.org/student-programme

Sunday -Tuesday is exciting for me as a lovely friend from Orchestra back home is doing 3 days of solidarity for No Shoes November!! Rhian Griffiths is doing AMAZINGLY! She deserves all the support she can get! She is posting my justgiving page http://www.justgiving.com/lucynoshoesnovember  and I've already received donations from her friends, I am SO grateful that she's raising awareness of extreme poverty in Royal Holloway University! I hope that her friends, classmates and lectureres are understanding and supportive. Lots of KOP love for you Rhian. Diolch yn fawr! Cariad mawr!

Thank you for all the donations over the weekend, they really mean the world to me!!
Only 6 more days to go!!

Cold day 22 ..

Anyone else tried walking on frosted ground and grass?
No I didn't think so.. It is freezing!! Feet have been cold all day, they ache and just look disgusting!!
First day walking round with a plaster on the bottom of my foot, stupid cuts .. :/

So I wore my hoody to promote it lots and as the whole of this evening the temperatures were already 0, the reaction was great!

My No Shoes November article was posted on the KOP website today, wahoo! Most of you will have read this as my first post, but to read it on the KOP website go to http://www.kopafrica.org/news/78/no-shoes-november.

Any UK University Students reading this wondering about the KOP Student Programme then go to  http://www.kopafrica.org/student-programme, watch the video and you'll see how inspirational KOP is and why I can't stop talking about it.

The trip to Kenya with KOP was my second visit to Kenya yet the trip to Kisumu with KOP was life changing and set me on a new path .. KOP taught me the importance of every child receiving nutritional meals, having healthcare facilities available to them and having access to a good education. With these three key aims KOP focusses on, a child is destined to have a good future. With a good education they can get themselves out of poverty by going to University and getting a good job. But they can only get a good education if they can attend school every day. But they cannot attend school every day if they are ill.

If we make sure EVERY CHILD has nutritious meals every day to stay healthy enough to attend school to get their education then we have succeeded in helping them get them out of poverty. Sometimes, it is that simple. EVERY CHILD I have met in Eastern Africa LOVES school and learning. EVERY CHILD always smiled even though they were suffering. EVERY CHILD in the world deserves a chance.

Please help me and the rest of the No Shoes November team, who can be found at http://noshoesnovember.com/, in our fight against poverty. TELL EVERYONE about No Shoes November. Take your shoes off. Pray. Donate. Do whatever you can to support us.
I love receiving donations from people that don't even know me, do you know why? It means the message has spread and other people too believe in what we dream. A world without poverty. It will happen. But only with lots of help from YOU!!

THANK YOU. Lots of KOP love.

8 days to go ... wahoo!! :D

More publicity and Sarah's day of solidarity ..

I must blog and share the excitement with everyone .. KOP is in the Evening Post again, wahoo!! :D
This time publicising No Shoes November!!
Please share it with EVERYONE you know. Wish I knew early on to tell everyone to buy it ...

But luckily they have it online so read it here ... http://www.southwales-eveningpost.co.uk/Lucy-bare-step-charity/story-20110152-detail/story.html

Apologies for the editing mistake, I of course met the beautiful youngster (as said in the paper) through KOP, not Tearfund. As much as I love the work Tearfund are doing and wholly support the lovely Sarah Lawrence in her fundraising for Tearfund. It should say KOP there.

I wore my No Shoes November hoody all day today as it was freezing. My feet are now in a right state, skin is awful, they are hurting all the time and I now have cuts .. :(

But it isn't about me and my pain, it is about the 1.4 BILLION living in poverty across the world that suffer pain EVERY DAY! We, yes that means you too, need to do something to stop this. Please share with EVERYONE YOU KNOW! Or take your shoes off for a day too and share with everyone like Sarah did today ...

Sarah Roberts, KOP Cardiff President, took her shoes off today in a day of solidarity. I am SO PROUD!! Such a cold day too. She too is raising for KOP. I'd love for you to support Sarah too.
She's raising on behalf of KOP Cardiff and the team page is  http://www.justgiving.com/kopcardiff2014.
She is a KOP legend, she too believes that Poverty is wrong, that's why she took her shoes off today! Please help Sarah, myself and the rest of the INCREDIBLE No Shoes November crew by supporting us, sharing our posts, pages, articles etc. Remember http://noshoesnovember.com/ and check out #noshoesnovember on twitter as there's an awful lot of posts!!

I really want to reach £1000 in the next 8 days. Can you help me do that .. If everyone that read this donated £1. That would be AMAZING!! £1 feeds a starving child 3 nutritious meals. Not much to ask! http://www.justgiving.com/LucyNoShoesNovember

Thank you for the continued support, kind words and donations through this cold weather.

Day 21 over, now I must wash my feet ..
KOP love.

Day 20 - the epic day!

I am literally beaming and crying with happiness today!! :D I've already spoken about it on facebook and on my video which you can watch below but I just want to reiterate how AMAZING it is to get positive feedback in the form of donations from members of the public who then share No Shoes November with their friends. This is EXACTLY what I wanted! To raise awareness of the 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty across the world and it is working, slowly and one step at a time. Between the 7 of us going barefoot every day we're doing a pretty good job at sharing across the country.

Funny barefoot joke from work today courtesy of the Pedricks, "How are your feet today Lucy?" "Oh don't ask her that, it's a sore topic!" Haha. Indeed they are sore after the INCREDIBLE day 19 I had.

For those of you reading this, have you told anyone else about No Shoes November? If you haven't told them then do so! If you have but haven't shared any of the No Shoes November websites then do so! We have 10 days left to raise as much awareness as possible! As much publicity as we can get!

Remember, Poverty is wrong, that is why we have taken our shoes off! I hope you too agree and would like to join me in a day of solidarity on one of the last days. I would LOVE some people in Swansea to join me. If you do, then take lots of photos, send them to me, and if you want to share my justgiving page http://www.justgiving.com/LucyNoShoesNovember then great, but just tell EVERYONE about No Shoes November and share
http://noshoesnovember.com/, at least!

Thank you SO much for all the support and donations. YOU ARE LITERALLY CHANGING PEOPLES LIVES!! TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

KOP will do incredible things with the money raised. Can you help me reach £1000 by the end of November?

Thanks again and enjoy the video .. :)

Day 19 :)

The 7.15am walk down to the train station literally froze my feet and of course my train was delayed making the wait even more painful! Luckily for once it wasn't raining but it sure was cold.

On the train I had some lovely ladies around asking what I was doing but also showing their concerns. At the same time I was getting messages saying that it was SNOWING! Please pray that it doesn't actually snow heavy enough for it to stick until December 1st. If it does my feet will surely fall off and I will get ill (which isn't a good idea). Currently re-thinking how to do No Shoes November if it actually snows, as I'm obviously still thinking about my health.

One of the lovely ladies on the train found my justgiving page and told her friend who donated to me with a lovely message saying "Well done and put plenty of cream on those feet"! The AMAZING thing is that I didn't even tell her how to donate. Such a kind gesture. MADE MY DAY! If you're reading, THANK YOU!!!

So, the rest of the day was just as epic! Had a wonderful day at the KOP office with the incredible hard working Natalia and Marti, lots to do for the 2014 Student Programme...

I finally met the lovely barefooter Sophie de Winter, truly inspirational, where I picked up my hoodie and tshirt. Don't they look amazing ...!? Will be wearing these with pride for the next 11 days :D

I also managed to pick up a copy of the Gair rhydd, Cardiff Uni Newspaper, in which we have a lovely article. My gorgeous photo with my favourite smiler from the feeding centre is there too :)

I then managed some free time with my amazing friends, but first had to roam the glass ridden streets of cathays. What a tiring but fun barefoot KOP day.

I would love it if you would share this blog and the No Shoes November pages with friends to raise awareness! I would love it even more if you could donate ahttp://www.justgiving.com/lucynoshoesnovember. Even just £1, as £1 is enough to feed a child 3 nutritious meals a day. Which is HUGE!

Just a heads up .. Keep an eye on the ITV Wales News report tomorrow eve, rumour has it, there will be some barefoot people talking about their amazing charities. (Sadly I won't be there but the others will be!)

So much love for KOP right now!!

Remember to post, share, like, tweet, pray and donate!!

Thank you :)

Day 18 ..

So today I got many mixed responses;

"OMG I must read your feet .. No Shoes November, are you stupid?! They'll drop off when it snows next week!"
"That's really cool. But you're wearing shoes outside though right? .. No! Oh ... "

"She's not wearing shoes!" (Asks why, then says to her friend) "We need more people in the world like her!"

Firstly, it must not snow before November ends!
Secondly, I am NOT wearing shoes outside, just to clarify!
Finally, so proud to hear that last comment.

I am trying so hard in life and feel I've found the path I was intended to follow. This path will be very tough, emotionally, mentally and physically. I intend to try and make a difference to those in the world who are in suffering and really need our help. I know I personally can't end poverty but I will make it my lifetime ambition to see it happen. Please help me to succeed by donating at http://www.justgiving.com/lucynoshoesnovember

Please share No Shoes November with your friends, family, colleagues, neighbours and get the whole country talking about it! Raising awareness of poverty is one HUGE STEP! Next is to all work together, as only together can we END POVERTY!!!

Sunday, 17 November 2013

Day 17

So today started with walking to church, where all the congregation still can't believe I'm going barefoot!

This afternoon I went for a lovely barefoot walk across the cliff tops of the beautiful Gower and the sandy beaches. Before I could get there I had to walk through mud, avoid dog mess, get thorns stuck in my feet and tip toe around rocks! All worth it for a lush day out and raising awareness of extreme poverty. :)

Feet needed a good soaking after!

Please tell everyone about No Shoes November. There is a rumour we'll be on the ITV News this week! If you know any famous people, please share our pages with them, we'd love more publicity!

Why don't you take your shoes off for a day in solidarity and post it on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/noshoesnovemberlucy) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/musicmeredith) Or just share whatever I post on there too!

KOP means the world to me! Projects like Kochogo Feeding Centre are the ones that literally keep the children alive that are living in extreme poverty. Your money can help them to have nutritious meals and grow so that they can go to school healthy and gain an education to have a chance in life. http://www.kopafrica.org/Projects/kochogo-feeding-centre

Please donate anything you can to help KOP support the orphaned and vulnerable children in Western Kenya living in poverty. £25 can feed a child 3 nutritional meals for a month!

Only 13 days left for my cold feet, please help myself and the No Shoes November team http://noshoesnovember.com/ by sharing, posting, retweeting, going barefoot, praying and donating.

Thank you :)

Friday, 15 November 2013

I insist that you check out the INCREDIBLE KOP website at http://www.kopafrica.org/
Once you're read more about KOP and watched the Student Programme video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRK7bo-y9-Y then you'll understand how truly life changing my trip was and how VITAL these donations are at http://www.justgiving.com/lucynoshoesnovember

Thank you!! :)

Day 15 Video

Here is the video I created after working a 12 hour day ...

I'll create better ones soon, I promise!!

Please watch it, share it and if you could donate too that would be amazing!!

KOP love.

Half way, day 15!!

“Poverty is wrong, so we took our shoes off”

‘No Shoes November’ is all about raising awareness of extreme poverty in developing countries. I am not alone in this brilliant but crazy initiative. I am part of a No Shoes November Team based in Cardiff, UK.
The idea was sparked by students and graduates who have travelled to developing countries and met people living in extreme poverty who want to do something to help them.  To us, No Shoes November is a personal challenge with a lot of heart behind it. To give you some facts and figures, there are 1.4 BILLION people living in extreme poverty around the world. By extreme poverty, these people are living on less than $1 (or 65p) a day.

We are just 7 young people (along with many friends going barefoot on odd days) that want to change this. We will be BAREFOOT for the whole of November, that’s 30 days walking around with no shoes on! We know that individually we are not going to be able to change the HUGE number of people living in poverty but with the help and support of you (yes YOU) we believe our dream of a world without poverty can become a reality. We are raising money for 4 different charities; Tearfund, Stand by me, Edith’s Home and KOP.  KOP (Kenyan Orphan Project) is the incredible charity I am fundraising for.

KOP is an international development charity based in Bristol that supports orphaned and vulnerable children in Western Kenya. KOP’s vision is a world where all children thrive through health and education. KOP’s mission is to work in partnership with local organisations to deliver school based health and nutritional interventions and to inspire groups of university students to become advocates for change. KOP has certainly achieved the latter! Around 150 students each year from 16 UK universities spend their academic year fundraising for KOP and spend 2 weeks of their summer visiting some of the projects their fundraising supports.

KOP changed my life forever. Witnessing the extreme poverty in the rural parts of Western Kenya that the children and communities live in was heartbreaking. There were children supported by the KOP student programme-funded feeding centre that wouldn’t be alive today without the help from KOP. This frequently brought me to tears, seeing their smiling faces every day yet deep down knowing how many illnesses they have and that their life expectancies were drastically reduced because of poor health, nutrition and sanitation, before KOP thankfully stepped in.

After two weeks of playing with and teaching children, preparing and serving food, talking to the members of the community and learning about their way of life made me realise that I couldn’t go back to the UK and carry on as before. Something more has to be done.

Since signing up for KOP’s Student Programme in November 2012 I have raised around £1,500 for KOP. I have participated in lots of different fundraisers including a 24 hour famine with fellow KOPper Sarah Roberts to raise awareness of the severity of hunger and starvation amongst the developing world and earlier this year I spent 5 days living off a £1 a day, spending a total of £4.76. I proved that it is possible to have 3 meals a day, although my portions were smaller which left me going to sleep hungry and constantly feeling tired. This is how 1.4 billion people feel in the world, every day.  This must change!!

I have been barefoot for over 2 weeks now, living every day the same just without shoes or socks. The ground is cold and wet, gravel hurts, frost literally freezes your feet and I am one of the lucky ones that have managed to avoid glass! But all of this doesn’t matter because we are doing this to raise awareness and raise lots of money.

There are loads of ways you can get involved! You can start by visiting our website where you’ll find more information about No Shoes November, profiles about the individuals going barefoot and where to donate. Support me on facebook and join the team.

You can join us for a day (or more) by taking your shoes off in solidarity and help us increase the awareness of No Shoes November.  You can donate anything at all and I’ll be grateful as every penny really does make a difference.

PLEASE tell EVERYONE you know about No Shoes November, let’s spread the awareness of extreme poverty and put an end to it.
